The Language of Flowers

Floriography, or the language of flowers, is the ancient practice of sending coded messages through flowers. People all over the world used floriography to send secret messages to lovers, friends, and even enemies. In this class, we will learn about flower dictionaries and what they can tell us about several different cultures' use of flowers as code—and we'll explore our own personal and cultural associations with flowers. We'll welcome spring with a flower-gazing practice intended to bring us into deeper communication with flowers and their messages, and we'll discover what doorways into writing open when we stop to smell the roses.
